Develop advanced operational skills to conduct complex prescribed burns, including safety controls, operational coordination, resource management, and dynamic decision-making. This course also covers how to develop the complex burn plans that support these operations, including risk controls, resource logistics, communications planning, and approval documentation.

Course Overview

This course gives you the skills to conduct complex prescribed burns under organisational procedures. You will learn advanced safety controls, operational coordination, resource management considerations, dynamic risk management, communications, monitoring, and contingency actions appropriate to complex burn environments.

This course now includes PUAFIR515 as an additional unit. That unit focuses on developing complex prescribed burn plans, covering advanced planning inputs, risk and control strategies, resource and logistics considerations, contingencies, communications planning, documentation requirements, and review processes to support safe and effective complex burn operations. Together these two units give you both the planning and operational capability needed to lead and coordinate complex prescribed burning activities.

This course is suited to experienced personnel involved in prescribed burning operations who are required to participate in, coordinate, or lead complex burn activities within organisational requirements, including those responsible for planning and approving complex burns.

Course Information

Entry Requirements

Minimum Age: 18 years old
Prerequisites: No formal prerequisites. Prior operational experience, agency prerequisites, fitness and workplace authorisation requirements, prior planning experience, and organisational role scope may apply for complex burn roles and plan development.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy: All learners complete an LLN assessment. Support is available where needed.
PPE and Equipment: PPE appropriate to prescribed burning environments is required. A device with internet access may be required for planning and document work if online learning is included.
Workplace or Site Access: Participants must be physically capable of completing field-based activities and planning tasks. Reasonable adjustments are available where appropriate.

Assessment

Statement of Attainment issued by Health Security Education (RTO #40907) for PUAFIR506 – Conduct complex prescribed burns. USI required prior to certification issue.

Outcome

Statement of Attainment issued by Health Security Education (RTO #40907) for PUAFIR406 – Develop simple prescribed burn plans. USI required prior to certification issue.

Fees inclusions/exclusions + refunds summary

Course fees include training, assessment and (where applicable) issuance of certification for participants who successfully meet competency requirements.
Course fees may not include personal PPE, travel, onsite delivery travel costs, replacement certificates, or additional resources unless stated.

Funding and subsidies: Where applicable, funding or subsidies may be available for eligible participants.
Payment terms: Payment is required prior to course commencement unless otherwise arranged.

USI: A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required prior to the issuance of nationally recognised certification.

Credit Transfer: Available for equivalent completed units where a valid and current Statement of Attainment is provided.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): May be available for learners who can provide evidence of current competence.
Pathways: This unit may support entry into further training pathways in health, community services, emergency response, workplace safety, or related outcomes, depending on learner goals and packaging rules.
