Course Overview

This course provides the skills and knowledge required to operate a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle safely on unsealed roads. Participants learn to plan and prepare for the task, identify hazards, apply risk controls, operate the vehicle to suit surface conditions, and complete operational checks and basic maintenance in line with workplace procedures. Training is practical and supports confident, compliant driving across common unsealed road environments used in forestry, resources and remote operations.

This course is suitable for workers who operate 4WD vehicles for work on unsealed roads, including forestry, land management, construction, tourism, energy and resources roles.

Course Information

Minimum age: 18 years.
Prerequisites: No formal prerequisites. Participants must hold a current driver’s licence suitable for the vehicle being used. Workplace authorisation and site requirements may apply.
Language, literacy and numeracy: All learners complete an LLN assessment. Support is available where required.
PPE / equipment / IT access: Suitable outdoor PPE may be required for practical sessions. A device with internet access is required if online learning is included.
Workplace or site access requirements: Participants must be physically capable of completing practical activities relevant to the unit outcomes, with reasonable adjustments available where appropriate.

Assessment may include knowledge questions and practical demonstration of safe 4WD operation on unsealed roads, hazard controls, vehicle checks and completion of required workplace documentation aligned to the unit outcomes.

On successful completion, participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment by Health Security Education (RTO #40907) for FWPCOT3325 – Operate four wheel drive vehicle on unsealed roads. A valid USI is required prior to certification issuance.

Course fees include training, assessment and (where applicable) issuance of certification for participants who successfully meet competency requirements.
Course fees may not include personal PPE, travel, onsite delivery travel costs, replacement certificates, or additional resources unless stated.

Funding and subsidies: Where applicable, funding or subsidies may be available for eligible participants.
Payment terms: Payment is required prior to course commencement unless otherwise arranged.
Refunds and withdrawals: Refunds are managed in accordance with Health Security Education’s Fees and Refunds Policy. Written notice is required to withdraw.

Trainer support is available throughout the course. Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) support and wellbeing support are available on request. Health Security Education provides a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment.
Participants must follow trainer instructions and use equipment safely. Reasonable adjustment is available where appropriate.
USI: A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required prior to the issuance of nationally recognised certification.
Policies and processes (including Complaints & Appeals) are available via the Student Handbook.

Credit Transfer: Available for equivalent completed units where a valid and current Statement of Attainment is provided.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): May be available for learners who can provide evidence of current competence.
Pathways: This unit may support entry into further training pathways in health, community services, emergency response, workplace safety, or related outcomes, depending on learner goals and packaging rules.
