Course Overview

Crystalline silica is found in common building products like concrete, brick, grout, engineered stone and some composites. When these products are cut, ground, drilled or polished, they can generate respirable crystalline silica (RCS)—a hazardous dust that can cause serious long-term health impacts.

This unit covers the practical skills and knowledge required to work safely with products and materials containing crystalline silica, including planning work tasks, selecting controls, using PPE/RPE correctly, and completing clean-up and maintenance activities in line with workplace and WHS requirements. Licensing, legislative or regulatory requirements may apply depending on your jurisdiction and work context.

This course is suitable for people who may be exposed to silica dust while working with or around silica-containing products, including:

  • Labourers and subcontractors working on sites where silica-containing materials are processed
  • Construction and trades workers
  • Renovation and demolition workers
  • Stone, concrete, tiling and finishing trades

Course Information

Minimum Age: Participants must be at least 18 years of age due to high-risk workplace context and typical site access requirements.
Prerequisites: CPCCWHS2001 – Apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy: All learners complete an LLN assessment. Support is available where required.
PPE / Equipment / IT Access: Access to appropriate PPE where required and a device with internet access if online learning is included.
Workplace or Site Access Requirements: Participants must be physically capable of completing practical activities relevant to the unit outcomes, with reasonable adjustments available where appropriate.
RTO: Training is delivered and certification is issued by Health Security Education (RTO #40907).

Assessment is competency-based and may include:

Written and/or verbal knowledge questions

Practical demonstration of safe work practices and control measures

Correct selection and use of PPE/RPE (including fit checking where applicable)

Completion of required workplace documentation (as applicable)

On successful completion you will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for CPCSIL3001 – Work with products and materials containing crystalline silica, issued by Health Security Education (RTO #40907).

A USI (Unique Student Identifier) is required before we can issue your Statement of Attainment.

Course fees include training, assessment and (where applicable) issuance of certification for participants who successfully meet competency requirements.
Course fees may not include personal PPE, travel, onsite delivery travel costs, replacement certificates, or additional resources unless stated.

Funding and subsidies: Where applicable, funding or subsidies may be available for eligible participants.
Payment terms: Payment is required prior to course commencement unless otherwise arranged.
Refunds and withdrawals: Refunds are managed in accordance with Health Security Education’s Fees and Refunds Policy. Written notice is required to withdraw.

Trainer support is available throughout the course. Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) support and wellbeing support are available on request. Health Security Education provides a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment.
Participants must follow trainer instructions and use equipment safely. Reasonable adjustment is available where appropriate.
USI: A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required prior to the issuance of nationally recognised certification.
Policies and processes (including Complaints & Appeals) are available via the Student Handbook.

Credit Transfer: Available for equivalent completed units where a valid and current Statement of Attainment is provided.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): May be available for learners who can provide evidence of current competence.
Pathways: This unit may support entry into further training pathways in health, community services, emergency response, workplace safety, or related outcomes, depending on learner goals and packaging rules.
