Course Overview

This nationally recognised course covers the knowledge and practical safety expectations for handling firearms and weapons in line with relevant legislation and workplace procedures. Learners develop an understanding of legal responsibilities, safe conduct, community safety principles, and safe handling practices under supervision. Training may include classroom learning and supervised practical activities, depending on delivery requirements.

NAT11029001 – Demonstrate knowledge of weapons legislation, weapons and community safety

This unit covers the knowledge required to understand relevant weapons legislation, safe responsibilities, and community safety considerations. Learners develop an understanding of legal obligations, safe and ethical conduct, storage and transport expectations, and how to support safe outcomes in the community and in regulated environments.

NAT11029002 – Use Category A and B firearms lawfully, safely and responsibly

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to use Category A and B firearms lawfully, safely and responsibly under supervision and in line with relevant legislation and procedures. Training focuses on safe conduct, hazard awareness, safe operation principles, and applying range or workplace procedures consistently in a controlled environment.

NAT11029003 – Use Category C firearms lawfully, safely and responsibly

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to use Category C firearms lawfully, safely and responsibly under supervision and in line with applicable legislation and procedures. Training focuses on safe conduct, hazard awareness, applying procedures in a controlled setting, and maintaining safety and compliance during supervised practical activities.

NAT11029004 – Use Category D firearms lawfully, safely and responsibly

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to use Category D firearms lawfully, safely and responsibly under supervision and in line with relevant legislation and procedures. Training focuses on safe conduct, risk controls, procedural compliance, and maintaining safety during supervised practical activities in a controlled environment.

NAT11029005 – Use Category H firearms lawfully, safely and responsibly

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to use Category H firearms lawfully, safely and responsibly under supervision and in line with relevant legislation and procedures. Training focuses on safe conduct, hazard awareness, applying procedures in a controlled setting, and maintaining safety and compliance during supervised practical activities.

Who This Course Is For

Suitable for people who need firearms and weapons safety knowledge and supervised practical competency for licensing, workplace requirements, club participation, or role-related compliance, subject to applicable legal and range requirements.

Course Details

Course Information

Minimum age: 18 years.
Prerequisites: No formal prerequisites. Participants must comply with relevant state or territory legislation and any range or workplace entry requirements. Photo ID is required. Where live-fire practical components are included, supervision and authorisations apply.
Language, literacy and numeracy: All learners complete an LLN assessment. Support is available where required.
PPE / equipment / IT access: PPE may be required for range activities, including hearing and eye protection if practical activities are included. A device with internet access is required if online learning is included.
Workplace or site access requirements: Participants must be physically capable of completing supervised practical activities relevant to the course outcomes, with reasonable adjustments available where appropriate.

On successful completion, participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment by Health Security Education (RTO #40907) for the units achieved within 11029NAT Course in Firearms and Weapons Safety. A valid USI is required prior to certification issue.

Statement of Attainment issued by Health Security Education (RTO #40907) for PUAFIR515 – Develop complex prescribed burn plans. USI required prior to certification issue.

Course fees include training, assessment and (where applicable) issuance of certification for participants who successfully meet competency requirements.
Course fees may not include personal PPE, travel, onsite delivery travel costs, replacement certificates, or additional resources unless stated.

Funding and subsidies: Where applicable, funding or subsidies may be available for eligible participants.
Payment terms: Payment is required prior to course commencement unless otherwise arranged.
Refunds and withdrawals: Refunds are managed in accordance with Health Security Education’s Fees and Refunds Policy. Written notice is required to withdraw.

Trainer support is available throughout the course. Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) support and wellbeing support are available on request. Health Security Education provides a safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment.
Participants must follow trainer instructions and use equipment safely. Reasonable adjustment is available where appropriate.
USI: A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) is required prior to the issuance of nationally recognised certification.
Policies and processes (including Complaints & Appeals) are available via the Student Handbook.

Credit Transfer: Available for equivalent completed units where a valid and current Statement of Attainment is provided.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): May be available for learners who can provide evidence of current competence.
Pathways: This unit may support entry into further training pathways in health, community services, emergency response, workplace safety, or related outcomes, depending on learner goals and packaging rules.
